Creamy Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Information
Fluffy potatoes mashed with tender garlic, butter, warm whole milk, and cream. This comforting side dish pairs beautifully with roast turkey and gravy for Thanksgiving or a family dinner.
Ingredients
- 3 lb (1.36 kg) Yukon Gold or other floury potatoes, peeled and cut into evenly sized chunks
- 6 garlic cloves, peeled
- 6 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into pieces
- 3/4 cup whole milk
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 1 tsp salt, or to taste
- 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
Preparation
- Place the potatoes and peeled garlic cloves in a large pot. Add enough cold water to cover by about 1 inch (2.5 cm).
- Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, until the potatoes and garlic are very tender when pierced with a fork.
- Meanwhile, gently warm the milk and cream in a small saucepan over low heat. Do not boil.
- Drain the potatoes and garlic thoroughly. Return them to the pot over low heat for 1-2 minutes, gently shaking the pot to evaporate excess moisture. Remove from the heat.
- Mash the potatoes and garlic with a potato masher until smooth. Avoid using a blender or food processor, which can make the potatoes gluey.
- Fold in the butter until melted. Gradually stir in the warm milk and cream, adding only as much as needed for your preferred consistency. Mix gently without overworking.
- Season with the salt and black pepper. Taste and adjust the salt if needed.
- Serve warm as a side dish with roast turkey, gravy, or your favorite main course.
